Hobson's Choice

Just wondered if anyone went to see the recent production at New Theatre Cardiff?
And, if so, were you as dissapointed as I was in the whole production. The set was quite drab compared with the CADS production, and as much as I admire actors moving across from television to the stage, I do wish they would realise that there is an audience out there. In this production most of the major speeches were delivered to the backcloth.

Ah - the difference between stage and screen. Yes, you have to make the audience watch you - otherwise they can't tell whether your eyes follow them around the room.

There is real problem with the New Theatre, the RSC last week were clearish but the accoustics are not good. Some years ago a group of us saw Richard Harris in a god- awful play. A lot of the audience threw in the towel at half-time and left. We were made of sterner stuff and remained to the bitter end, besides we had paid for our tickets and weren't going to waste our money. The only thing that made it bearable for me was that I only heard one word in three, I lost track of what passed for a plot and dozed off. At least it meant I was in 'sparkling' form for the postmortem at John and Enid's later.
